رودین در سال 1840 در خانواده ای طبقه کارگر در پاریس متولد شد ، او فرزند دوم ماری شفر و ژان باپتیست رودین ، که منشی اداره پلیس بود. رودين از 10 سالگی شروع به تحصيل  کرد. بین 14 تا 17 سالگی ، در Petite olecole ، مدرسه ای که در هنر و ریاضیات تخصص داشت، تحصیل کرد و در آنجا نقاشی و نقاشی را فرا گرفت. معلم نقاشی او هوراس لکوک د بوئیزبوران اعتقاد داشت که ابتدا شخصیت دانش آموزان خود را پرورش می دهد تا آنها با چشمان خود مشاهده کنند و از یادآوری هایشان نتیجه بگیرند.

رودین در مورد آنچه مشاهده می کرد یادداشت می کرد و اسکچ های قلم یا مداد سریع را می ساخت اما تنها یک کتاب نوشت: کلیساهای جامع فرانسه ، که در ابتدا در سال 1914 در فرانسه چاپ شد (وقتی رودین هفتاد و چهار ساله بود) و  نیم قرن بعد  به انگلیسی ترجمه شد.

Beonon Press  در سال 1965 با چاپ زيبايي به چاپ رسید .

رودین از توانایی منحصر به فردی برای مدل سازی یک سطح پیچیده ، آشفته و عمیق  برخوردار بود.

او از سوي بسیاری از برجسته ترین مجسمه سازها مورد انتقاد قرار مي گرفت زيرا  از الگوهاي سنتي آميخته با ظرافت استفاده نمي كرد . اصلی ترین اثر رودین از مضامین سنتی اساطیر و تمثیل فاصله گرفت و از بدن انسان با رئالیسم الگو گرفت و از شخصیت و بدنی فردی استفاده کرد و از تغییر سبک خود امتناع ورزید. آثار موفقیت آمیز او باعث افزایش علاقه وافر دولت و جامعه هنری به سبك او شد.

در سال 1864 ، رودین اولین مجسمه خود را برای نمایشگاهبه سالن پاریس تسلیم کرد. يك قطعه برنز غیر متعارف از يك پيرمرد خياباني ، این اثر بر بافت و وضعیت عاطفی موضوع تأکید داشت. اما نمايشگاه قطعه را رد کرد.

در بروکسل و پس از بازگشت از ایتالیا ، نخستین اثر کامل خود با عنوان عصر برنز خلق کرد. يك چهره با الگوبرداری از یک سرباز بلژیکی كه از برنده مرگ میکل آنژ ، که رودین در لوور مشاهده کرده بود ، الهام گرفته شده بود. در تلاش برای آمیختن تسلط میکل آنژ در قالب انسان با احساس خود از طبیعت انسانی ، رودین الگوی خود را از همه زوایا ، در حالت استراحت و حرکت مورد مطالعه قرار داد. او برای چشم انداز اضافی بر بلندي قرار مي گرفت و مدل های خشتی را با نور شمع  مورد مطالعه قرار داد.

رودين به عنوان مجسمه ساز بزرگ هميشه مطرح بوده است در كنار مجسمه هاي به جا مانده از او، اسكيس هاي فرم هاي پيچيده او  از محبوبيت بالايي برخوردار است.
